Micah is thrilled to announce his first book!
Opening Doors is a memoir, an autobiography, and a collection of Micah’s stories and essays in his own words.
Micah and Lynn Albee were a tireless team, working on this book for five years. Micah provided the stories and experiences, and Lynn put them into the form that is finally available as a book!
“This book is important because it shows what happens after school is over; how does inclusion work? What can life look like with the right community supports and encouragement?”
— Lynn Albee
What people are saying about Opening Doors…
“I met Micah through his parents when I came to Detroit. I was immediately and consistently blown away and educated by how Micah approaches life, health, and his rights. Micah has taught me that I was mis-educated about disability, that I had excluded so many people from my worldview. Because of Micah, I have worked to increase access through the spaces I facilitate. My thoughts on inclusion are that we must include all the people of earth in the structures and systems of earth. We must include people of all abilities in any progress of design if we hope to have true access.”
Adrienne Maree Brown
“This book isn’t just an endorsement of Micah’s indomitable spirit; it’s a call to action for educators, families, and policymakers to commit to creating environments where every student can thrive.”
Lee Ann Jung
“With Opening Doors, Micah and Lynn fill a much-needed space in disability literature. This book represents positive interdependence and the value of community at every turn.”
Brent C. Elder
“It is rare to hear directly from trailblazers as they are often busy doing the hard and difficult work of breaking through boundaries. . . . I’m grateful to live in a world being shaped by changes Micah, and his circles of support, helped to make.”
Naomi Ortiz
“Micah is the foremost practitioner of advocacy by and for interdependence that I know. With the backing of his family and a growing Circle of Support he has developed from elementary school classmate to university instructor, from dorm room to his own home, from student of leadership to advisor to a US President. . .This memoir exemplifies concerned and contributing citizenship. Practicing its lessons offers a politics of healing.”
John O’Brien
“Micah’s 40-year story (with many more years still to come) is never about one moment. Rather, it is about the constant, relentless focus on recognizing how when we embrace the brilliant humanness of each member, we all become more human human beings. I know more of who I want to be in the world as a sister, wife, colleague, friend, and educator because of my brother, Micah.”
